When is divorce the right answer?

A subtle disagreement. A change in beliefs. Do those types of occurrences warrant a divorce? Perhaps not, but infidelity, criminal involvement and abuse are absolutely reasons you might want to end your marriage.

For many people, divorce is never an easy decision to make. Assessing your relationship might help you determine if you should move on to protect yourself and your future.

Threats to your safety

You should never feel unsafe or threatened in your own home. If your partner threatens to harm you, physically assaults you or mistreats you in other ways, divorce may be the only way to escape. Sexual and psychological abuse can also damage your self-esteem and prevent you from living a happy and productive life.

You might also have concerns about the well-being of your children and other family members. Leaving an abusive situation is often scary and uncertain, not knowing how your spouse will react to your departure. You could need the help of authorities to make your move without jeopardizing your safety.

Strain on your mental health

Being in a marriage with someone who puts very little effort into the relationship can take a toll on your mental health. According to The New York Times, communication is a vital part of marriage. If your spouse refuses to communicate with you, you may continue to suffer silently for the rest of your marriage.

Infidelity, betrayal, dishonesty, persistent disrespect and abandonment are problems your marriage might overcome. However, each is a significant problem that can change the dynamic and result in a loss of trust and respect.

You deserve to be part of a happy, healthy, functional relationship. If your marriage no longer provides that outcome at the cost of your sanity and confidence, it might be time to consider divorce.
